Steps in a slab and the steel that has to follow them
Where a slab changes level, the reinforcement has to carry past the step.
In short: A Gables pour booked for the next day had steps with no reinforcement extensions.
Why slabs step
Sloping lots and level changes between garage and house mean many Gables slabs are not one flat plane. Each change in level is a point where the slab is weaker unless the engineer's step detail is followed.
What the detail asks for
Typically extra bars carried a set distance past the step on both sides, so the two levels act together. The exact figures are on your engineering, and they apply to every step on the plan.
What we recorded
On a Gables slab inspected in September 2026, steps had been formed with no reinforcement extensions provided. We classed it as a major item and referred it to the engineer before the pour.
Why it is a pre-pour item only
Once the concrete is placed there is no practical way to confirm the bars are there. A day's delay to add them is cheap; uncertainty for the life of the slab is not.
What to ask your builder
Ask for the step detail to be followed or for the engineer's written acceptance of what was built, and for confirmation before the trucks are booked.
